GridLock
APR 2026
A transit demand simulation for Seattle, shown on an interactive 3D map. Finalist at UWBHacks '26.
- Won a Finalist prize at UWBHacks '26
- Judges especially liked how applicable it was, and the demo
What I built
I built the whole React frontend: an interactive 3D map of Seattle, made with MapLibre, that renders 3D buildings, transit routes, and a demand heatmap.
The main challenge was the map data. I pulled building footprints and building sizes from multiple sources and combined them into a map that stayed fast and still looked good.
What the team built
- Backend: a FastAPI service that streams live heatmap data over Server-Sent Events and switches between simulation states.
- ML: geospatial joins, distance-based weighting, GTFS parsing, time-binned features, and gradient-boosted regression, combined into a transit demand model that works for any city.
- Infrastructure: Docker Compose with separate frontend and backend images, GitHub Actions CI/CD with automated tests, and Caddy and Nginx reverse proxies.
Result
GridLock won a Finalist prize at UWBHacks '26, and it's still hosted.
